Focussing On Health Span Than Lifespan

Focussing On Health Span Than Lifespan

Lifespan literally means the number of years an individual lives and health span means the number of healthy years, an individual lives. Most individuals would prefer living a healthy life rather than having a longer unhealthy lifespan. It can also imply that having a greater number of healthy years may ultimately contribute to a longer lifespan. Living a life dependent on hospitals, machines and medicines not only makes life difficult but also creates a financial burden at the last stages of life. With science and technology expanding by leaps and bounds, promoting healthy life years and having a longer health span has now been the focus of research. The goal is to achieve a healthier, more productive and higher quality of life.

There are three major factors indicating the reason of health span being into focus these days: First is the increasing cost of treatment, Second, is the availability of technology and means to predict the biological age and hence know the aging at cellular level, third factor being the increased research supporting enhanced health span than therapeutics. All these factors indicate that we have the ability to predict and modulate aging by intervening at the right time and hence improve health span and lifespan. Expecting a multimodal approach towards achieving a longer lifespan, from the research community, is holding a place today and there are numerous ways we are also getting closer to fulfilling the expectations. There are multiple ways of predicting the biological age of a human being (DNA-methylation biomarkers being the cutting-edge technology these days) and how this age can be reduced dramatically by tracking the age-related indicators on time and working in the direction of improving the overall health of an individual. Timely tracking of these indicators and timely solutions to the targeted indicators can help improve the biological age of an individual and hence may help in increasing the lifespan of an individual.
